Self-care – building your routine

“It is so important to take care of yourself. I drink a lot of water, eat mostly fresh fruit and vegetables, and do yoga once a week and go hiking every chance that I get. It is so important to take time for yourself and find clarity. The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself.”

Diane von Furstenberg

Creating a self-care routine can be a great way to prioritise your physical, mental and emotional well-being. Self-care is an essential investment in one’s overall health and happiness. It does not have to be extravagant or expensive and can range from small daily activities to larger projects that take more time.

A meaningful self-care routine should focus on things that bring you joy and make you feel relaxed, rejuvenated and inspired. It could include physical activities such as yoga or running, creative projects like painting or drawing, or mental exercises like guided meditation, journaling or mindfulness practice. During the winter months, it is essential to incorporate activities that promote relaxation such as reading a book by the fire, taking a warm bath or watching a movie with friends.

Other aspects of self-care include eating nutrient-dense foods that nourish your body, getting adequate sleep each night and connecting with your community by attending social events or volunteering with an organisation. Additionally, it is important to schedule regular checkups with your doctor and dentist in order to ensure that your health remains in good condition.

Making time for yourself during the day is essential for finding balance in life; setting aside even just 15 minutes a day devoted only to yourself can make a huge difference in how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally. The key is to find what works for you—whether it’s incorporating more movement into your day by going for walks outside or carving out specific days for certain activities such as yoga on Monday nights—and integrating those activities into your current lifestyle so that it becomes part of a healthy daily routine.
